Meet #51   |   07/06/14   |   Hosted by Liz
Liz hosted World Whisky Night (TM), except the Czech one didn't make the party, so we had two in a blind tasting - would we work out what was what?

Smells
Quite a rich sweetness on the nose, with caramel, toffee and dandy bars, the boozieness of sherry and brandy, the rich sweetness of glacé cherries, contoffysey (whatever that is?!), mixed fruit peel, and finally mature wood, pine varnish, tree sap and wet dog.
Tastes
Much like the nose we have a continued deep, rich sweetness, with milk chocolate, and toffee apples. In fact it's like “skiing into a giant chocolate caramel but then there's a hole in the chocolate like your exact shape – then there's an instant move into toffee”. There is also a lot of fruit going on, with raisins, cherries, stewed rhubarb crumble and apple. Finally there’s a touch of cinnamon and maybe a hint of smokiness with barbecued chocolate éclairs.

Finish & Comments
On the finish, there's a little bit of leather, like an armchair, also worn fabric - like the smell of an old arm chair-musty (there's a distinction here between a leather armchair and fabric armchair mind). There is also a bit of sweetness running through to the end, with hot plum jam, and chilli hot chocolate, vanilla ice cream and cream soda.

For info: This limited edition from the same distillery which produces Bain's grain whisky went down well as quite an easy dram but with a somewhat sweet complexity to it. It made one person say, “whisky’s so brilliant”, something it’s hard to disagree with.
