For info   Reviews on sshhh! aim to detail the flavours, feelings and quality of each dram, wrapped up in as little nonsense as possible (!). Each whisky is tried on its own and given time to speak out, even if they often talk gibberish.

Distillery profile   Silent for: 41 years   |   Existed for: 185 years   |   Type: malt
One of the cult lost Lowland distilleries, it's one of the many fatalities of 1983. A generally classic Lowland profile, people swear by many of these Linlithgow bottlings.. - see Malt Madness - St Magdalene for a detailed profile.

Tastes & Smells
Sweet smell initially, with 'good lemon' and almonds, a floral thing throughout. The lemon and flowers continued into the taste, now sour lemon and roses. Tinny flavours, finishing sour with a fizzy hit.

Worth shouting about?
My first St Magalene, and I was really excited to get to try one. I have to admit, I was pretty disappointed with it. It wasn't bad spirit, but just pretty sour for my tastes and a little sharp in the palate. It definitely smelled better than it tasted, but didn't give a huge amount of body (OK, it's a Lowland, but still..)

Summary & Ramblings
Tasted by the canal in Linlithgow, before we boarded the canal boat called the "St Magdalene", so couldn't have been much more of a suitable location. It was sour and metallic, with a few roses around the edges not unlike the canal boats by our sides.

6.7
1.3

  On top of the canal boat "St Magdalene" - perfect.

tldr;
Really glad I got to taste this but it wasn't as good as I was hoping tinny, sour and not that much body, with a few redeeming features. It wasn't bad spirit, but definitely not for me (others liked it a lot more).
