Lochside Distillery - Montrose, Angus
G&M bottling (purchase link).
WhiskyBase reference page

For info   Reviews on sshhh! aim to detail the flavours, feelings and quality of each dram, wrapped up in as little nonsense as possible (!). Each whisky is tried on its own and given time to speak out, even if they often talk gibberish.

Distillery profile   Silent for: 32 years   |   Existed for: 35 years   |   Type: malt
A repurposed brewery, Lochside was located in the eastern Highlands until it burned down in 2004. It had stopped producing from its Coffey still in 1973, and had a popular following in Spain for a while. - see Malt Madness - Lochside for a detailed profile.

Tastes & Smells
Salty, fruity (aprictos nad peaches), and definitely minty on the nose. Some of those smells come through in the taste too: salty, fruity and mellow. Fatty, sweet with subtle medicine. A little new-makey, tangy and sour. Quite hard to pin down. The finish was weak, or medium, souring slightly.

Worth shouting about?
It was 6.50 for a dram, so I thought I had to taste my first Lochside. In fact, there was only half a dram in the bottle (hence the photo has limited whisky in it!). I can confirm it was a pretty light colour, and tasted as you might've predicted from that. It was mellow and hard to pin down, but the three of us who tried it all liked it. Flavours perhaps didn't jump out, but most of them were pleasant enough... it wasn't hugely memorable though.

Summary & Ramblings
I've not got a great deal to add, it was a brief glimpse of this distillery - enough of a pleasing trip that I'd happily go back again.. hopefully with a slightly bigger sample ;)

2.6

  Only half a dram, but the colour was pretty light like it looks.

tldr;
Quite minty on the nose and fruity and bit salty throughout. Everything was pretty mellow though, and no flavours were really shouting from the rooftops - not bad, will look for another Lochside somewhere..
