For info   Reviews on sshhh! aim to detail the flavours, feelings and quality of each dram, wrapped up in as little nonsense as possible (!). Each whisky is tried on its own and given time to speak out, even if they often talk gibberish.

Distillery profile   Silent for: 26 years   |   Existed for: 101 years   |   Type: malt
A pretty underknown distillery, Imperial has had a history of closures, before finally being demolished in 2013. Surrounded by pine trees, and supplied by Ballintom Burn, this Speyside distillery has limited bottlings these days, but they're not particularly sought after. - see Malt Madness - Imperial for a detailed profile.

Tastes & Smells
On the nose, there's clear mint and minty garden herbs, lemon toothpaste, nail varnish remover, haystacks and ham. It's a bit gentler and light on the palate, a tiny amount of acid and slight lemon, nice and creamy also ("Thanks, Creamy!). Somewhat watery, with cress, tobacco and toffee. There's a sweet aftertaste, 'jelly baby', watery melon, cheesey.

Worth shouting about?
The taste and finish were a bit watery, and to start with I thought I didn't like it at all... it was a bit weak towards the end. But it was better than first thought, with a gentle minty toffee thing going on. Nothing great, though.

Summary & Ramblings
This was tasted in the Kilderkin, Edinburgh. It was the first time I'd seen an Imperial for sale and it wasn't too pricey - it took a while to realise it was a new distillery for me.. even in that context, it wasn't a great dram - but not a bad one in either, although it took a while to convince me of its qualities.

6.1
2.1

  I'm surprised I (drunkenly) managed to take a reasonable photo..

tldr;
Minty toffee - a little too watery, but improved over time. I'd like to taste a cask strength, mayeb slightly older, version to see what it can really offer - an OK start, but nothing more.
