Glen Mhor Distillery - Inverness |
Tastes & Smells
Mad: the nose was off-putting, farmy in a bad way, somewhat like a hot woodland... Really old lemons (like the Rosebank F&F I tried earlier in the evening, but in a worse way. But then, pop it in your mouth and bang! Rich and sherried, slight dryness but otherwise a candy-sweetness: a creamy, rich sweetness, in fact. The finish is also delicious: soft, minty and a little toothpastey (in a good way as far as I remember).
Worth shouting about?
Mmmm! I wrote that down. I remember this fondly, it had a really nice richness to it and a good sweet-dry balance too. It smelled pretty terrible, mind but the contrast perhaps gave it even more of a boost. Not amazing, by any means, but very nicely made and it felt as though it was bottled about the right time. The finish was great too, and quite different to the taste, which makes for a nice change.
Summary & Ramblings
My first Glen Mhor, maybe even my last? (It is pretty rare stuff, after all..) It was rich, nicely balanced and made me think of a decent sherry cask, despite it being in a bourbon cask its whole life. A good cask though, I suspect, and an interesting result. Not massively distinct, nor exotic, but good and moreish (Mhor-ish?).

tldr;Generally pretty delicious, despite having a powerfully farmy and off-putting smell. I wanted more, which is annoying for a pretty rare distillery. Nothing unique really, just rich and moreish.
