For info   Reviews on sshhh! aim to detail the flavours, feelings and quality of each dram, wrapped up in as little nonsense as possible (!). Each whisky is tried on its own and given time to speak out, even if they often talk gibberish.

Distillery profile   Silent for: 31 years   |   Existed for: 195 years   |   Type: malt
One of a number of silent lowland malts, Rosebank produced whisky by triple distillation, a rarity in Scotland. Bottles are still reasonably available, but are tend to be mostly longer-aged and pricey examples. - see Malt Madness - Rosebank for a detailed profile.

Tastes & Smells
A rich nose beckons: oaky and sherried, with tobacco and toffee, no freshness here. Ham really shines through from the sherry. That sherry really dominates the taste too, now with spice and ham again. It's salty too, but that disappears quickly. It's quite dry and less fruity than its tasting companion. Almonds and bananas offer something a bit different, and a tongue zing hits, but the sherry really dominates, coming in on the finish strongly too. It keeps tingling whilst the spice comes back, and the ham from the nose comes back to bid you farewell.

Worth shouting about?
It's nice, but feels too dominated by the sherry. Tasted alongside a non-sherried Rosebank of the same age, it feels like the original distillery flavours have been masked, although the nose is nice and rich. It's not unlike a grain whisky in some respects, and I sense it's not a classic example of the distillery. No doubt it's a nice dram, but it could've been better treated.

Summary & Ramblings
It made me think of rolling down a non-hill (a phrase that made more sense to me at the time), and a storm hitting a coastal village - a rich history somewhat wiped out by a tidal force.

  The sherry influence can clearly be seen (R).

tldr;
Rich and sherried, it feels a bit masked from what it could've been. The sherry influence wasn't necessarily a bad direction, but I felt it had been taken too far. It was a bit hammy and not as fresh as you'd expect from a Lowland.
