For info   Reviews on sshhh! aim to detail the flavours, feelings and quality of each dram, wrapped up in as little nonsense as possible (!). Each whisky is tried on its own and given time to speak out, even if they often talk gibberish.

Distillery profile   Silent for: 31 years   |   Existed for: 195 years   |   Type: malt
One of a number of silent lowland malts, Rosebank produced whisky by triple distillation, a rarity in Scotland. Bottles are still reasonably available, but are tend to be mostly longer-aged and pricey examples. - see Malt Madness - Rosebank for a detailed profile.

Tastes & Smells
Fruity on the nose and old apples. Then just apples, then slightly older apples. Minty and licorice too. Those old apples have turned into apples on the turn on the taste, perhaps in storage too long? Mix that with toffee and malted milk and a drop of ice-cream and things have got nicely puddingy, with an orangey vibe over the whole thing. The finish turns more into apple and blackcurrant squash, with the toffee and maltiness continuing.

Worth shouting about?
This was good, rich and had an almost unique profile with all those old apples. It had a better nose, taste and finish than the St Magdalene OMC 26yo it was tasted alongside. Some felt it was too delicate, but I enjoyed this one and felt it was pretty well balanced and bodied.

Summary & Ramblings
Tasted next to my first St Magdalene, this was one of a few Rosebanks I'd tried, and unlike the others. It had a really distinct old apple flavour that was very pleasant and was richer and less-Lowlandy than the other examples I'd sampled. A triple-distilled Lowland that had more in common with a fruity bourbon for me, in a good way.

  This photo was somewhat of a balancing act..

tldr;
Very distinct old apple flavours in this pretty rich, almost bourbony, dram. Not a 'classic' Lowland nor Rosebank, but a pretty enjoyable thing to try canalside, or probably anywhere for that matter. Would've been much better value at its original price, mind..
