For info   Reviews on sshhh! aim to detail the flavours, feelings and quality of each dram, wrapped up in as little nonsense as possible (!). Each whisky is tried on its own and given time to speak out, even if they often talk gibberish.

Distillery profile   Silent for: 22 years   |   Existed for: 105 years   |   Type: malt
Located in Rothes, Caperdonich was originally known as Glen grant #2, but has since developed more of a personality of its own. Bottles are generally well-regarded and its star - and price - is rising. Probably fair to say it's one of the more missed lost Speysiders. - see Malt Madness - Caperdonich for a detailed profile.

Tastes & Smells
A pretty rich nose, which initially gave off spiced apple crumble, takeaway curry and fermented dark cherries. Toffee and popcorn gave a butteriness and sweetness, with only marker pens and mackerel (I think so, anyway!) offering resistance. Rich and sherried in the mouth, with liquorice and apple pie. Spiced and spicy (or somewhere between lemonade and spice), this tended to seep rather than attack but kept a bit of burn in hand. Sweet on the finish, turning to sour over time.

Worth shouting about?
Compared to the Caperdonich 20yo it was tasted alongside, this was richer and enjoyably sherried and offered more taste than its companion, even if again, it didn't exactly throw flavours at you. It had a very enjoyable, rich nose and the taste was good - just getting a little too spicy at points. If it hadn't soured on the finish, it would've scored a little higher - it left you with a less-pleasant memory than you'd have expected.

Summary & Ramblings
I enjoyed this enough for my mind to stay quite focused on the dram, yet not enough to be whisked off to some exotic locale on the thought train, so I've got little more to add. I just sort of imagined sherry and when dinner would be ready.

  A bit more awe than nawe, this one.

tldr;
Rich and sherried, a good nose moved onto an ok taste and similar finish, although it soured towards the end. A nice example of a Caperdonich, but I still feel it's got plenty more to give..
